TikTok Content Creators Fueling Parallel Trade for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

A shadow market for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.

Investigational Drug Gaining Popularity Online

Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to contact these profiles privately for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.

Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms

Additionally, a flourishing trade exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” images, injection guides and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Vendors market the substance there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for transactions.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an investigational injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could assist patients lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Express Worries

However, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to users injecting products of uncertain source.

Several experts said the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising price of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Enforcement

Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some influencers try to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or prison.

Platform Response and Content Elimination

According to the social media company, the service has removed problematic material and banned associated hashtags and query recommendations. The company said it was committed to maintaining the platform secure and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Online Marketplace Activities

Investigations also discovered groups with up to nine thousand participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of members, filled with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at home.

Within moments of joining one community, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The seller provided an guidebook and promised delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Item Information and Pricing

Within these groups, posts show dark colored packages with postal service stickers, stating to include new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between powder vials, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens usually priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a injector should be used, sellers give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly monitored harmful material on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Warnings

“People are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online versions may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in demand to current cost increases for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using social media. But fake treatments are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has previously seen patients injured by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational substance not yet approved … may subject users to possibly significant medical dangers”.
