The Former President's Regime of Punishment and Favor

Trump's voracious appetite for revenge has swiftly morphed into a organized system. During the twelve months, the leader's rage and caprices have adopted the form of administrative measures in a manner reminiscent to earlier authoritarian regimes. Government figures who fail to comply are immediately dismissed and replaced by supporters. Political figures who confront him encounter legal action, trial and penalties. Opponents have been designated under presidential orders as “hostile to national interests”, “against faith communities” and “anti-capitalist”, and threatened with criminal charges as “terrorists”.

Federal Agencies Restructured

All case involving targeting of political opponents and immunity for loyalists displays its own distinct characteristics. Yet, despite their specific character, they exemplify examples of what has developed as a calculated technique. These episodes are anything but coincidental. The administration's cleansing of Department of Justice prosecutors and law enforcement personnel, alongside his placement of loyalists in high-level positions, commenced quickly, promptly took on a regularity, and has now been shaped into a structure. Federal prosecutors and the law enforcement agency have been remade into partisan agencies under his direct orders to execute his demands. Injustice has been made normal. This is the retribution system.

Management is more concerned with punishing the President's supposed adversaries than they are with safeguarding our country's safety.

Within the Apparatus

The origin of this system has been exposed in the legal complaint of several former high-ranking Federal Bureau executives submitted in late summer in the federal court in Washington against FBI director a senior appointee and justice department head another official for wrongful dismissal in “a campaign of revenge against them for what administration figures considered to be a failure to demonstrate adequate allegiance”. In the complaint that one official, the previous acting FBI director, recounts a discussion in which he “openly admitted the impropriety of his behavior”.

The official had attempted to defend law enforcement officers from being terminated, the filing states. Patel advised him that “administration officials” – understood by him to be the presidential administration and DoJ – had instructed him to dismiss everyone who they identified as having participated in a criminal investigation against him. The document adds: “Patel clarified that he had to fire the personnel his leaders told him to fire, because his capacity to retain his own position relied on the dismissal of the officials who handled matters involving the President. The director explained that there was no way he or the official could do to halt these or any other firings, because ‘the FBI attempted to place the chief in prison and he remembers.’” When Driscoll informed him he was breaking the FBI's own internal rules, he supposedly said “he knew that and he knew the nature of the swift terminations were likely illegal”.

Broad Impact

Since Patel's reported confession to him, the justice department and the Federal Bureau have been gutted and reorganized for Trump's revenge apparatus. Multiple of the FBI's high-ranking agents were dismissed or forced out in the first days of the administration. Roughly thousands of legal professionals at the department have taken a “deferred resignation program”. A minimum of multiple federal prosecutors, including those in the southern district of New York, resigned in protest over what they viewed as ideological pressure in withdrawing the criminal prosecution against the New York City mayor, Eric Adams, in return for his assistance with his Immigration and Customs Enforcement roundups of migrants. The public integrity section of the department, which handles ethical violations, has been reduced to a handful of lawyers. The equality section has been devastated: 70% of its staff has left. One-third of top officials at DoJ have quit. The division enforcing environmental law has experienced the exit of half its management.

Incentives and Penalties

Concerning the legal matter, the temporary lawyer for the federal division, Danielle Sassoon, resigned in dissent against what she labeled as the “exchange”. Tom Homan, his “immigration leader,” showed up as the enforcer with him on a media outlet to announce: “If he doesn't come through, I will return in New York City.”. And, another figure, formerly the senior DoJ official and a former Trump attorney, who negotiated the arrangement, was awarded an court role, a likely pathway to the supreme court.

The president's protection for wrongdoings perpetrated while in power, awarded by the extraordinary judgment of the conservative on the highest court, thus preventing his legal action over the political violence and preserving his public standing for the national vote, is the cornerstone on which he stands to defend his stalwarts. Given this protection, he has been empowered to permit wrongdoing. The effect of the court judgment permeates his government and the GOP thoroughly. Trump v United States has metastasized. In the words of Richard Nixon's legal adviser John Dean remarked about the Watergate
