Our Leading Album of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Top Spot.

On the surface, this album might appear more like a challenging scholarly challenge than the latest popular music project from an artist whose previous hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop icon. Broken across 4 distinct movements and performed in 13 tongues, we have a dizzying orchestral-influenced opus that delves into female mystique, religious transcendence, and corporal change, often by way of the perspective of various women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—soars skyward here, supported by the lush presence of a full orchestra and input from an award-winning composer within a vast list of collaborators. The pure daring alone makes the efforts of contemporary pop stars seem quite modest.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

The fact that Lux succeeds in transcend dry intellectual posturing is almost miraculous, and sole credit going to the artist. While this is not the first time album to blend historical sounds with modern styles, the ambitions feel far greater on Lux, and the tightrope walk more precarious. What truly elevates this fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, rich compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be a core sense of joy. Similar to the iconic artist during her height, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's voice that pulls the listener up in its tornado. Even when she is breaking hearts apart, you still want to be right there through the journey.

A Signature Moment of Joy

That exuberant spirit shines clearly on a stunning Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy for several minutes. Suddenly, everything drops silent, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh and a comment before a hilariously over-the-top string crescendo thuds in with comedic force. The song then shifts into the wild track driven by galloping strings, an imposing choral group, and a cameo appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic of this album is that the listener never exactly know—or even want to know—where you is going to next."

Almost each track finishes in a totally different point than where it started. A track examines the fleeting nature of celebrity over a delicate orchestration before disintegrating in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's previous trap-infused style starts off dark and brooding, with prowling beats, until fluttering traditional handclaps and a heavenly choir enter to soften its jagged edges.

The Balance Between Art & Pop

Another crucial balancing act of the album involves straddling the line between radical innovation and mainstream appeal. This is little surprise that the album has become her highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a suite of truly catchy pop songs. A song sung primarily in English swells on a chorus that seems to gather increasingly infectious melodies as it spins upward. That trick is echoed by another expansive track that grows and contracts, weaving multiple tunes like an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural honesty of other breakup songs, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "psychological bully".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale character concealing a blade: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a grand level, an ambitious reach for high Art in an era of looming artificial sameness. It rejects self-absorption for glorious elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. This is an abundant source of hidden gems that takes patience to fully mine but doesn't seem like hard work. Where other major releases of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, this record is a sumptuous banquet where the guests at the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred wine, flit between discussions about ancient saints, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly restlessly creative visionary.
