The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
